King County adds Recycle Coach tool; county staff to host pop-up recycling and shredding events

Claire Ryan, King County recycling program staff member, demonstrated the Recycle Coach web and mobile tool to the Energy and Environmental Committee on Jan. 17 and said the tool is available to municipalities through an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency contract at no additional county cost.

She used a flat-screen TV and Christmas lights in the live demo to show how the tool recommends drop-off locations, best practices and fees for electronics recycling.
Ryan noted the county and local partners will host a pop-up event at Geneva Commons with electronics, textiles and book collection and a shredding truck; organizers will supply QR codes linking to Recycle Coach guidance. She said the IEPA contract made the service available statewide without direct county licensing cost.
Claire Ryan said language support options for the tool include English, Spanish and four additional languages the county selected for its audience. She said that, where municipalities supply address and schedule data, residents can also access a personalized pickup calendar in the app.
Ending: Ryan urged municipalities to provide schedule data so more residents can use the calendar features and encouraged residents to use Recycle Coach to find lawful drop-off options and event details in their area.
