Board approves 2025–26 district calendar; staff-selected fall break set for Oct. 16–17

The Box Elder School District Board of Education approved the 2025–26 school-year calendar, adopting a fall break that district staff recommended for Thursday and Friday, Oct. 16–17.
Assistant Superintendent Keith Meekum presented results of a staff survey that influenced the recommendation. Meekum summarized the calendar structure and the staff input that produced the leading choice: "The leading vote getter is ... October 16, 17th," and said the district had solicited teacher, ESP and administrator responses before finalizing the recommendation. Board members asked clarifying questions about kindergarten testing dates and parent concerns; Meekum said kindergarten testing dates are not a board approval item and are assigned by teachers and communicated publicly as required.
The board heard a short review of the statutory requirement for instructional days: "We are required to have a 180 days of education," Meekum told the board, explaining the calendar totals — two parent-teacher conference days, four professional-development days and 174 instructional days for a 180-day school year. Meekum also explained the district traditionally starts later because of the Box Elder County Fair and that spacing days around fall break and other pauses are intended to meet state rules and community expectations.
Board member Brian Smith moved to approve the calendar as proposed; Karen Cronin seconded the motion. The chair called the voice vote and recorded unanimous approval.
