San Diego Community Power staff reviewed the agency’s sponsorships, partnerships and memberships for calendar year 2024 at the Jan. 16 Community Advisory Committee meeting, saying the program aimed to build brand awareness, support electrification and reach underserved communities.
“Over calendar year 2024 we granted over 40 sponsorships with a total value of nearly $200,000,” Lee Friedman, senior manager of strategic partnerships, told the committee. He said 27 sponsorships included a community‑outreach element and 13 included opportunities for thought leadership such as panels, keynotes or media engagement.
Friedman described multiyear partnerships with the San Diego Padres and San Diego Wave Football Club. With the Padres, SDCP sponsors the “Tonight’s Lights” announcement during evening home games at Petco Park, provides in‑stadium signage and operates an activation kiosk for fan engagement; staff noted Petco Park is the first National League stadium powered by 100% renewable energy. With the San Diego Wave, SDCP supported in‑stadium Fan Fest activations and digital/field signage; staff noted the Wave organization is a “power 100” champion though the Snapdragon Stadium facility itself is not yet powered entirely by renewables.
Friedman also highlighted the Regional Energy Academy partnership — modeled on a citizens’ energy academy — which runs multi‑day cohorts to raise energy literacy among local leaders. He said applications exceeded available spots for the March cohort and that the agency’s partnership supports two cohorts per year.
Staff said partnerships are prioritized for community reach across member agencies, and sponsorship decisions follow an internal policy adopted in March 2023 that restricts political activity and requires alignment with the agency’s mission. Friedman said staff use a monday.com database to track sponsorships and that the agency periodically reviews and refines sponsorship criteria.
Committee members asked about engagement with local chambers of commerce and interest from other sports franchises; staff said those conversations are ongoing and that membership in regional organizations helps place the agency at the table for policy discussions and coalition building.
The presentation was received for filing and required no formal committee action.
