Pacific Grove Unified board approves 2023–24 school accountability report cards for posting

Board members moved the SARC item from the consent agenda to action so trustees could ask questions before the board approved posting. Trustees who spoke said they generally favor keeping SARCs on consent when the data show no material changes, but they agreed the item should be an action item when trustees or the public request discussion. Trustee comments focused on using SARCs as a planning tool that informs the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and school improvement planning.
During discussion, trustees and staff highlighted several specific data points trustees asked to watch: chronic absenteeism as a trend indicator, and a low number of students reported in the high school science CAASPP test that produced “double dashes” in subgroup rows when fewer than 10 students were reported. Hedquist explained that dashes indicate fewer than 10 students in the subgroup for the tested course or grade and that the district recently changed which grade takes the science CAASPP, which affects cohort counts.
After public comment and board discussion, a trustee moved to approve the SARCs “as presented” and the motion was seconded. The board approved the motion 5–0. The board also previously approved the consent agenda (contract for services with Eddy Bailey) and the meeting agenda modification that moved SARCs to action; both votes were recorded as passing 5–0.
What the board approved is a posting action: Hedquist said the district will post the full SARC packet in the board materials and on the Pacific Grove Unified and California Department of Education websites by the February 1 deadline. Hedquist described the SARCs as a single reference for parents and the public and noted the reports are used internally for school improvement and accreditation work.
Trustees asked staff to return with any follow-up clarifications identified during review (for example subgroup reporting in science and chronic-absenteeism trends). Hedquist and staff agreed to follow up on those clarifications and to use the SARC review to help align school plans and the LCAP.
