House Commerce committee introduces intern, sets procedures and schedules H 34 review

The House Commerce and Economic Development Committee used the Jan. 17 meeting to introduce legislative intern Helen Ardrates, clarify the intern’s role and reporting schedule, and set near-term committee housekeeping: counsel will walk members through H 34 next week and the committee expects to take testimony the following week.

The committee chair (unnamed in the meeting record) and members described how the intern will support committee work through weekly briefings and ad hoc research assignments. Ardrates said she will aim to send reports on Thursdays and that the reports will be posted before Friday meetings. Committee members asked that those reports note dates when other committees take testimony on bills that overlap with House Commerce jurisdiction so members can follow relevant hearings.

On H 34, the chair told members the committee would have the committee lawyer present next week to walk through the draft and that testimony would likely follow the week after. The chair described that sequence as intended to help members get up to speed on the committee’s jurisdictional items.

The chair and members also covered routine administrative items: confirming liaison contacts between members and staff, advising new members about expense-report procedures (including a noted glitch when marking per-diem meal taxes), and reminding members about scheduled committee photographs and the day’s expense cutoff.

The committee took no formal votes or final actions at the Jan. 17 meeting; members used the time primarily for introductions and to outline logistics for upcoming substantive work.
