Hillsborough County Public Safety Coordinating Council elects Susie Lopez chair; names Chief Judge Sabella vice chair and affirms subcommittee leaders

The Hillsborough County Public Safety Coordinating Council on Jan. 17 elected State Attorney Susie Lopez as chair and Chief Judge Sabella as vice chair, approved the Nov. 22, 2024 minutes and confirmed chair and vice-chair assignments for the council’s subcommittees.
Those leadership changes follow the retirement of longtime chair Julie Holt and an expressed willingness by Sheriff Chad Chronister to remain on the council but step down from the vice chair role. The council’s votes set the membership that will lead the council’s work on incarceration, reentry, facilities and other public-safety matters for the coming term.
The minutes for the Nov. 22, 2024 meeting were approved on a motion by Nick Bates, with a second recorded for the record, and the chair said the vote was unanimous. Bates then nominated State Attorney Susie Lopez for council chair; the council voted in favor. Chief Judge Sabella accepted a nomination for vice chair and the council voted in favor.
Council members then moved through the list of standing subcommittees and confirmed chairs and vice chairs by voice vote. Confirmations announced on the record included: - Incarceration Committee: Chair Nick Bates; Vice Chair Lisa McLean (approved by voice vote). - Reentry Committee: Chair Sheriff Chad Chronister to remain in that role (approved by voice vote). - Long Range Technology Planning Committee: Chair Victor Christ (approved by voice vote). - Facilities Committee: Chair Sheriff Chad Chronister; Vice Chair Mark Proctor (approved by voice vote). - Domestic Violence Committee: Chair Robert Parkinson; Vice Chair Robert Rodriguez (approved by voice vote). - School Safety Planning Committee: Chair Van Aries (approved by voice vote). - JAG/Grama Committee: Chair Judge Jeff Rich; Vice Chair Lisa McLean (approved by voice vote). - Grant Planning Council: Chair Chief Judge Sabella; Vice Chair Gina Justice (approved by voice vote).
The council chair and vice chair appointments will determine who represents the council on interagency matters and who leads the subcommittee nomination process going forward. The chair congratulated the newly elected officers and the meeting proceeded to new business and presentations.
