South Charleston City Council members praised the city's public works crews for their response to recent winter weather, singled out an employee named Jake for recognition and described the difficulty of salt-truck operations during heavy snow and ice.
During general business discussion, a council member told the chamber that public works staff had repaired a damaged fence in a neighborhood after a snow response and that residents expressed appreciation. "I called him up. I said, it's official, Jake. You are the public works director now," one council member said, praising Jake's work.
Council members recounted operational challenges, including trucks getting stuck on steep or icy streets and the intensity of salt-truck work. One speaker described a vehicle that had turned sideways on Ranch Road and a prolonged recovery effort. The meeting included informal recollections of past equipment limitations on Sutherland and references to James Park's elevation in town affecting snowfall.
Officials invited residents to participate in ride-alongs with snow crews to learn firsthand about winter operations. "Open invitation to anybody that wants to do a ride along with salt trucking," a council member said, adding the experience is intense and best done in heavy snow.
These remarks were part of informational discussion; there was no formal action recorded related to public works staffing, policy changes, or budgets at this meeting.
