Board completes first reading of seven policies, discusses AI language and discipline exception

Policies considered on first reading included edits to AAC, FDD and FF; a new policy ABDB on use of generative artificial intelligence; an updated whistleblower protection policy (ACF); a minor revision to BA (board ethics); and a new policy IAD concerning sale of district real property. The board also acted on BA-BR2 (board member internet/social media use) following recent U.S. Supreme Court guidance referenced in the staff memo.
Discussion highlights: Board members asked the policy review committee to revisit a paragraph in the proposed AI policy that "encourages staff to explore generative AI to discover lesson plan ideas, create templates or assessments, and to generate ideas for the personalization of student learning." Member concerns centered on whether that encouragement could be read as a blanket endorsement that might complicate future personnel evaluations if a teacher used AI to produce instructional materials. Dr. Quach, who leads the district’s AI task force, told the board the task force reviewed the language and was comfortable with the draft but said the task force will revisit the wording at its next meeting and bring suggestions back to the policy committee.
Another board member requested clearer language in the discipline policy to ensure alternative high school programs are explicitly treated by their own conduct policies; staff said they would consult with North Dakota School Boards Association counsel and return recommended edits.
Votes: The board approved the first reading of the seven policies (AAC, FDD, FF, ABDB, ACF, BA, IAD) and BA-BR2 on a roll call vote (9–0 for each motion). The first reading does not finalize the policies; a second reading is required before final adoption.
