Superintendent reports: Career academy construction advances; district financials, kindergarten roundup and foundation staffing updates

Lincoln and Hughes projects: The district reported the Lincoln project came in under budget by roughly $400,000 and has about $20,000 remaining; district staff said they plan to close that project in the coming month. Work at Hughes is on hold pending other dependencies; minor work by internal staff is planned.
Financial snapshot: Board finance staff reviewed the month-ending November financials. The board's financial presenter said the district's year-to-date revenues were "slightly trending as unfavorable to the tune of about 500,000," while expenditures were under budget by about $1.5 million, leaving a year-to-date favorable variance overall. The presenter noted that some federal grants (for example Johnson O'Malley) show higher receipts than budgeted, which affects line-item variances but is federally funded and tracked separately.
Kindergarten roundup: The district urged families to complete kindergarten registration beginning Feb. 1; the administration said those counts are used to set kindergarten sections and staffing for the coming year.
Foundation staffing: The superintendent announced a resignation in December of the BPS Foundation director, thanked Stacy Lang for her service, and said the position has since been filled; the district plans an introduction of the new foundation director at a later date.
Board members asked for continued periodic updates on career-technical education (CTE) programming and funding plans. The superintendent said he has advocated at the state capital for programmatic funding and said facility and program planning are coordinated.
No formal district budget action or CTE funding award was taken at the Jan. 13 meeting; board members received updates and direction to seek funding and continue planning.
