Dodge City High School students preview 82nd Tournament of Champions, mark 1,000th game

Student organizers for the Dodge City High School Tournament of Champions described plans for the 82nd annual event, which will be held Jan. 23–25 at the United Wireless Arena and will mark the tournament’s 1,000th game since its start in 1944.
Amory Bogner, a senior and one of the tournament’s student chairwomen, told the board that the event remains a midseason destination for highly ranked teams and coaches. She listed participating schools, noted Wichita Heights coach Joe Auer’s 30th season and upcoming retirement, and described special weekend events including the FCA gathering on Friday night and halftime half‑court shot contests that will award $1,000 to successful shooters. "This year marks the 82nd annual Tournament of Champions," Bogner said. She also announced that the tournament bracket would be released later in the week and provided ticketing information and pricing for a special three‑day pass priced at $19.44 in honor of the tournament’s 1944 origin.
Other activities include academic and cheer awards sponsored by the Rotary Club, elementary school visits by tournament teams, a halftime performance by the DCHS drill team, and streaming of all 12 games on NFHSNetwork.com. Sponsors listed during the presentation included Common Spirits, St. Catherine Hospital, Dodge City Community College, United Wireless Arena, the Lions Club of Dodge City and the Rotary Club of Dodge City.
Why it matters: The Tournament of Champions is a longstanding community athletic event that draws teams and spectators statewide and provides student leadership and volunteer opportunities.
