Staff outlines schedule for Hot Springs heritage preservation plan and flags upcoming housing‑study planning

Planning staff told the Hot Springs City Planning Commission on Jan. 16 that the city’s first heritage and historic preservation plan is underway and funded by a grant from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.
Staff said consultant updates will go to the Historic District Commission on Thursday, Feb. 20, with a community workshop scheduled that same day at 5:30 p.m. at the Transportation Depot. A draft plan will be presented to the Historic District Commission at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, with a community forum on the draft planned for April 17 at a time to be determined. Staff stated the project is scheduled for completion by June 1, 2025, and provided a project website, www.hsarpreservationplan.com, for updates.
Planning staff additionally said the department is preparing to begin a housing study and asked commissioners to start thinking about constituencies and stakeholders to involve when Director Shelman returns. “We’re gonna have to put a plan together pretty soon to get this started,” the staff announcement said.
Commissioners did not enter further discussion and the director’s report concluded.
