The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Persons with Disabilities Workforce Support Subcommittee elected Andrew LaVarte as its chair during a meeting held virtually (date not specified). Angela Ortiz, the outgoing chair, nominated LaVarte and Representative Kate Khan seconded the motion; the subcommittee approved the appointment by voice vote.
The change followed remarks from Angela Ortiz that she would step back from the chair role because of new responsibilities in her other organization. Ortiz said, “I'll still be, you know, workforce development and support is always gonna continue to be really important for me,” and described stepping back so the subcommittee can have a chair able to give the role sufficient time and attention.
Andrew LaVarte accepted the nomination. As he took the role he said, “I'm certainly happy to accept the position.” Iman (commission staff) and Representative Kate Khan were present during the nomination and voice vote; no recorded nays or abstentions were recorded on the meeting record.
The meeting also included a procedural vote to accept the subcommittee’s October meeting minutes. The motion to accept the minutes was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote on the record.
The subcommittee noted next steps for the new chair: LaVarte has already reached out to CHIA and an invitation to present 2023–2024 human services survey findings is planned for the next subcommittee meeting. Staff members volunteered to follow up on scheduling with external presenters and with Executive Office of Health and Human Services contacts to maintain continuity.
