Senate adopts resolution designating Jan. 9 as Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

Senate Concurrent Resolution 2, recognizing Jan. 9, 2025, as Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in Delaware, passed the Senate on a roll call Tuesday after remarks from the resolution sponsor and members of the Delaware State Police executive staff.
The resolution, presented by Senator Pettyjohn, honors law enforcement officers and highlights organizations that support families of fallen officers. "This resolution not only honors the brave men and women who serve in law enforcement but also underscores our deep respect for their unwavering commitment to public safety here in the First State," Senator Pettyjohn said during floor remarks.
The resolution's sponsor introduced members of the Delaware State Police executive staff in the gallery. Colonel William Crotty, Major Pete Sawyer, Major Jason Satt, Major Christy Ballinger and Major Jeremiah Lloyd were recognized. Senator Pettyjohn referenced the role of national organizations that support officers and survivors, saying, "An integral part of supporting law enforcement is recognizing the importance of organizations like the national concerns of police survivors or COPS." He also recognized Ruth Ann Spicer, a new per diem employee in the Senate caucus and a family member of a fallen officer, asking her to stand.
Senator Lawson, speaking from personal experience as a retired Delaware State Police officer, urged motorists to give officers room on roadways and described the unpredictability and danger officers face during traffic stops. "Please make sure everything you can do to make sure they get home come the end of the day," Lawson said.
After debate and an opportunity for additional cosponsors to be added, the Senate took a roll call. The assistant called 18 yes votes; Senator Pinkney was recorded absent and two seats were vacant. The clerk announced the tally as 18 yes, 1 absent and 2 seats vacant and declared that Senate Concurrent Resolution number 2 had passed the Senate. Senator Townsend said the Senate would coordinate with the House so the resolution could be considered there as well.
The resolution is a ceremonial measure and does not create new law. It was reported passed by the Senate and sent to the House for consideration.
