The New York State Assembly convened in Albany, opened with ceremonial remarks and introductions, and welcomed 21 newly elected members while directing the Government Operations, Housing, Ways and Means and Rules committees to meet off the floor to prepare the chamber's first calendar.
The session included a brief prayer and the pledge of allegiance, followed by a reading and dispensation of the journal of the prior session. Members used the floor to introduce visiting civic leaders and a slate of newly elected colleagues from across Long Island, New York City and upstate regions. Speaker-level remarks asked members to extend the privileges of the floor to guests and to cooperate during the introductions.
Visitors introduced included community leaders from Long Island such as Daphne Irizarry (Long Island Latino Teachers Association), representatives from Ronald McDonald House, Make the Road New York, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, and a group connected to the Sing Sing prison arts program who were invited for an evening screening of the film Sing Sing. Several members also introduced family members and interns present in the gallery.
Members briefly described the districts and backgrounds of the new assembly members โ emphasizing prior municipal, law enforcement, education and community service experience โ but the session did not include substantive policy debate or formal votes on bills. The scheduling direction for the four committees was presented as preparatory work to generate the first calendar for floor consideration later in the day.
The house later stood at ease while committees met off the floor. The introductions and committee scheduling constituted organizational business as the Assembly prepared to begin its legislative work for the session.
