Council discussed staffing changes in the police department and possible hires at the Jan. 14 workshop.
A council member reported Officer Williams is no longer on the borough payroll, freeing a vacancy and allowing the borough to move forward with recruiting. Council members said another officer may retire soon and that the borough has a ranked list of candidates awaiting conditional job offers; conditional offers are required before candidates can complete medical, psychological and background checks. “We can't go any further without the conditional job offer,” the manager explained during the discussion.
Council members discussed hiring one officer now because budgetary constraints allow a single hire and keeping a second candidate ready to fill the next expected vacancy. They noted that once hired it typically takes about six weeks after hire for an officer to complete field training before they can work solo. No formal vote was recorded on Jan. 14; council asked the manager and chief to proceed as allowed by budget and civil-service/list rules and to schedule any actions for a subsequent meeting if required.
