Griswold said the library runs roughly 150 programs a month and provides a monthly director's report with statistics and a synopsis of highlighted programs. She reviewed the board's role in policy review and said the board annually reviews library policies and contributes to a five-year plan the board submits to the city council (Griswold noted the five-year plan is generally submitted in November though technically due Dec. 30). She also said the library conducts a "library happiness" survey annually and that the current survey was open and scheduled to close at the end of the month.
Marketing and outreach staff member Tiara described her role running social media platforms, coordinating campaigns and doing community outreach to schools and nonprofits. Tiara said she had contacted partners about events and reported several partnership requests had already been returned following a mass outreach email. Tiara and board members discussed a proposed library mascot; several options were being reviewed and the firefly design nicknamed "Flash" was the leading option. Tiara said any final mascot design would need approval through the communications office and city manager's office.
The student liaison from Hendrickson High School, Jade, reported the school's "8th-grade invasion" is planned to introduce middle-school students to high school and its options, including library resources and extracurricular clubs.
Griswold requested volunteers for the five-year plan committee, which typically includes the chair, vice chair and one additional board member; Griswold clarified a small committee does not constitute a quorum and the committee's work is done online. She encouraged board members to send agenda items to her in advance so they may be posted with the agenda 72 hours before a meeting.
Upcoming events mentioned during the discussion included Winterfest (this Saturday), a Romance Reader Social (February, for ages 18 and up), Pet Fest (March) and a teen job fair on March 1 seeking local employers. Staff also said they were recruiting partners for homeschool fairs and outreach volunteers.
No formal action was taken on the mascot or program policies; board members said they would review design options and discuss or vote at a future meeting.
