District announces $200,000 network upgrade, $90,000 cybersecurity pilot and COPS grant purchases

Estill County technology staff reported Jan. 16 that the district secured multiple technology and safety grants and planned equipment purchases to strengthen network security and on-campus safety.
"The technology department just got approved for about a $200,000 upgrade for all of our networking equipment," a technology department staff member said. He added the district was selected as one of about 700 schools nationwide to participate in a $90,000 cybersecurity pilot; the district's required share was stated as $3,000 per year (totaling $9,000 over three years) for $90,000 in product and services.
The presenter identified Fortinet as the vendor for new firewall and networking equipment. Separately, the district reported winning a COPS SVP grant; with a local cost share they will procure roughly $155,000 in equipment that includes about 80 new two-way radios for staff and two security camera servers with analytics and AI capabilities to support law enforcement response and campus monitoring.
Board members praised the awards as improvements to student and staff safety and the district's technology infrastructure. The board did not take formal action on these announcements; staff indicated procurement and implementation steps would follow grant terms and vendor contracting.
