The Estill County Board of Education voted Jan. 16 to accept the district's school nutrition program report and approved routine consent items, including minutes and the treasurer's report.
The nutrition report presented federal reimbursement and participation data for the district's five schools. "We are a CEP district, so 100% of our children receive free meals," Vicky Puckett, a school nutrition staff member, told the board. Puckett said federal reimbursement for lunch last year was almost $1,167,000, with 262,869 lunches served and an average daily participation of about 1,555. Breakfast reimbursement was listed at $447,183, with 160,913 breakfasts served and an average daily participation of about 952.
The report noted the district participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), meaning all students receive free meals; adult lunch and breakfast prices were listed as $4.60 and $2.75, respectively. Puckett also reviewed federal nutrition standards, noting the district must meet the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act guidelines and USDA/Kentucky Department of Education standards such as Smart Snacks; she said sodium and added-sugar targets will tighten in coming years.
Board member Veil Samples moved to approve the school nutrition report; Jamie Hardy seconded. The board chair called the vote and the motion carried (vote tally not specified in the record).
The board then considered routine consent items including December minutes, a special Jan. 1 call meeting to set meeting dates and swear in newly elected members, the treasurer's report and other recurring items. Carrie Smallwood moved to approve the consent items; Sheila Singles seconded. The motion carried by a 4-0 vote, according to the meeting record.
Board members and administrators emphasized the operational demands of meeting federal nutrition rules and noted the district continues meal pickup service during school disruptions. Superintendent Clint Brock urged community members with needs to contact central office for support.
