Board holds first reading of four policy updates including records, safety and devices

The Oceanside Union Free School District Board of Education held a first reading on four policy matters on Jan. 15 that the policy subcommittee recommended for public posting and later vote.
Mr. Scholl, who led the subcommittee review, told the board the district had compared its policies with recommendations from the New York State School Boards Association and revised language where required. The items for first reading were: a revision to the district’s records policy (district policy number 1503, incorporating state guidance), continued study of a student and personnel electronic devices policy (NYSSBA model 5695), revisions to financial policy 6100 including a new section 6101.7 governing acceptance of gifts, grants and projects, and a comprehensive update of school building safety policy to align with NYSSBA model 8130 (district policy renumbered as 6608).
On the gifts language, Board member Mr. D'Ambrosio sought clarity about ownership and authority to move or remove gifted items after acceptance. Mrs. Scholl and Dr. Harrington said the subcommittee will consider adding wording to make explicit that once the board accepts a gift it is district property and may be relocated or replaced before the end of its useful life. Mr. D'Ambrosio agreed to submit suggested verbiage in writing to the subcommittee for review before the final vote.
Mr. Scholl said the policies will be posted on the district website for 30 days for public review and then returned to the board for a vote at the next meeting.
