Board approves consent agenda, district positive behavior plans and 2025–26 calendar; enters closed session

Details and discussion

Calendar changes described by staff included moving six contract days for teachers to the start of the school year (one district-directed professional development day, one principal-directed PD day and four prep days), recognizing an August 19 orientation day for ninth graders and setting the first instructional day as Aug. 20. The district moved an elementary parent-teacher prep day to Sept. 26 (elementary-only) and designated Nov. 14 as a secondary-only day. The calendar provides two full weeks for the December break (removing the two “orphan” days before Christmas), moved a previously scheduled Dec. 12 PD day to Feb. 13, and removed a June 1 PD day so teachers need not return after students leave. Staff said the calendar aligns more closely with neighboring districts for fall and spring breaks.

Board members and staff noted concerns from classified hourly employees about a longer Christmas break and potential impacts on hourly pay; staff said most full-time classified employees are on equal-pay schedules but acknowledged short-term hardship concerns for some hourly staff. The presenter said the calendar committee process will be broadened next year to include more school representatives earlier in option development.

The board also heard a financial update from Jared Black, who said the district will begin a Title III audit later this year and has started work to implement 2024 legislative changes that restrict charging what the state considers “general fees.” Black said the district will seek a mix of one-time state funds and other mechanisms to replace revenue previously collected through those fees and expects related policy work to come to the board for review in late February or early March, with a required completion by April 1.
