Baywalk work mobilizes; pedestrian bridge utility relocation under way, 10th–12th Baywalk nearly complete

The committee received progress reports Jan. 16 on the Baywalk and the associated pedestrian bridge. David Gomez, director of capital improvements, said contractors have mobilized at the pedestrian‑bridge site south of Fifth Street at the causeway and started utility relocations, and that permits for structure work are being finalized.
Gomez said crews “have begun installing their MOT, and they will begin the process of relocating the underground utilities to make way for foundations in the bridge structure.” He added that contractors have intermittently taken part of the right‑turn lane off the causeway and will reopen it when possible until heavier equipment arrives.
On the Baywalk itself, Gomez said the 10th–12th Street segment is in the final stages and “they remain on schedule to complete by the end of this month.”
Committee members noted some condominium boards reviewing easement agreements for segments that cross private property (South Bay Club, Bayview Terrace, Bay Garden Manor) and asked staff to confirm recorded easement statuses; staff replied the city has recorded easements in some places but proposed adjustments in others to better align with seawall work. Members also embraced a suggestion to consider dedicating the bridge in honor of the late commissioner Mark Samuelian; the committee agreed to recommend such a dedication to the City Commission.
The committee asked staff to return with another update at the February meeting and staff indicated a potential groundbreaking “save the date” was being coordinated with the developer’s public‑information team.
