BIXBY — The Bixby Board of Education approved a pilot program with Khan Academy on Jan. 16 that will provide adaptive assessments and AI-assisted tutoring tools to high school algebra and geometry students at no cost to the district, and separately approved a $3,455 supplemental contract for expanded student tutoring services.
District staff said the pilot uses adaptive assessments (three 45-minute assessments) to identify unfinished learning and to tailor instruction. Cody (district teaching-and-learning staff) said the pilot’s Khan system adapts test items to the skill level shown by students so teachers receive actionable data and that the pilot’s license will run for 18 months.
Board members approved the pilot item on a unanimous vote. The board also unanimously approved a supplemental contract to add Khan’s student tutoring services for a district-wide cohort at a low per-student rate. District staff said foundations provided seed funding that reduced the typical cost (cited as approximately $35 per student elsewhere) to about $2.50 per student for the current period; the supplemental contract totals $3,455 to be paid from general funds.
District staff described professional learning supports for teachers (two 45-minute sessions, roughly 1.5 hours total) and said use of the system by teachers is supplemental, not mandatory. The district also said it will use single sign-on rostering so students can access Khan tools through district systems and that student privacy protections are included: the Conmigo/Khan systems will not send student response data out to public AI models, staff said.
Board members discussed how the tools could support novice teachers and provide individualized practice for students who are reluctant to ask questions in class. The pilot covers grades 9–12 algebra/geometry initially; the district said middle-school teachers currently use IXL and the pilot was not intended to duplicate that program.
