Laredo veteran peer network to hold free ‘Mud Fiesta’ March 15 with 150 veteran slots

Veteran peer network organizers told the Laredo Veterans Affairs Committee on Jan. 14 that a free “Mud Fiesta” for veterans and the Laredo community will be held March 15 at Bartlett Park (Bartlett and Thomas). “This three-part event will consist of a mud run, which is, you know, for physical health. And then it's going to be also a mental health and wellness fair where we're gonna have local organizations providing education on mental health and wellness,” said Ryan, a veteran peer network representative.
Ryan said organizers are still finalizing the flyer and registration details, which they expected to post by the upcoming Friday. The mud run itself is for participants 18 and older. Organizers set a 300-participant cap with 150 slots reserved for veterans; any remaining veteran-reserved slots will be made available to the public once veteran registration closes.
Eric Castillo, a speech therapist with ECI Progeninos who joined the planning team, described the event as intended to build camaraderie and connect veterans and families with services. “We provide case management for them... there’s gonna be a lot of community support there to help our veterans and community to identify problems that they might have,” Castillo said.
Organizers listed partner groups including the VA Whole Health, VFW, Black Widows, AHEC, the Texas Veterans Commission and District 5 City Councilman Ruben Gutierrez, who is sponsoring the event and will assist promotion. The event will include a family fun zone for children and spectators; organizers also said security and local police will be present.
Registration is free but will require standard waivers; exact start times for the mud run will be announced after a coalition planning meeting. Ryan said the registration process and final flyer would be posted the Friday following the Jan. 14 meeting.
