City will open extreme‑weather shelter at East Boulder Community Center this weekend; transportation and targeted options available

The City of Boulder announced during the Jan. 16 council meeting that it will open an extreme‑weather shelter beginning Saturday to respond to an incoming cold spell.
Chris Maschak, deputy city manager, said the shelter will be operated in partnership with Boulder County, the Office of Disaster Management and community partners. The site will be in the East AgeWell wing of the East Boulder Community Center; the East AgeWell side will close to normal programming at noon the day before the shelter opens to allow setup and will remain closed through the following week for shelter operations and cleanup.
People seeking emergency shelter should first check in at the All Roads Shelter at 4869 (address given in testimony) for intake; the city will provide transportation to the East AgeWell overflow site when All Roads reaches capacity. Additional transportation supports will be available to move people to the overflow facility when needed, Maschak said.
City staff also described partner facilities oriented to specific populations: Haven Ridge will be available for persons identifying as women, transgender or non‑binary; Together Is the Source will serve youth experiencing homelessness. Maschak said organizers will provide shuttle service and other supports consistent with the city’s sheltering plan.
City staff urged residents who were concerned about unsheltered neighbors to direct them to the All Roads Shelter; staff also said volunteers and staff from the city and county would operate the shelter for the duration of the extreme weather event.
Council members thanked staff and partners for the rapid mobilization and the volunteer effort required; no additional council action was required during the meeting for the shelter activation.
City staff later confirmed they would provide additional information in writing and had added extra shuttle capacity to support transport to and from the East AgeWell overflow shelter.
