District librarian outlines plan to revitalize Taos school libraries, align curriculum and add digital resources

The district’s newly assigned librarian described a multi-step plan to expand and standardize library services across Taos Municipal Schools.
Staff said they have met with site principals and will conduct a needs assessment at each campus to document library space, current equipment and program goals. The plan includes drafting a library curriculum aligned to American Association of School Librarians (AASL) standards and New Mexico Public Education Department information-technology standards, plus a year-at-a-glance and lesson sequences.
District staff said GoBond funds from 2022 were used to buy hardcover books as an initial tranche of materials; future phases will explore digital resources such as e-book and audiobook platforms, library apps for student checkouts, and interlibrary collaboration with UNM Taos and town and tribal libraries to expand access. School leaders also discussed how library services can support literacy, math and other subject proficiencies and how technology and AI tools might be incorporated to teach information-sorting and research skills.
The librarian said next steps include completing the site needs assessments, finalizing the curriculum and working with IT and grants staff to identify digital-resource procurement and staffing needs. Board members and administrators praised the initiative and asked for a written plan and budget details for future meetings.
