Taos High teacher awarded $10,000 PLTW grant to buy laptops for computer science

Greg Manuel, a science and computer science teacher at Taos High School, told the board he was awarded a $10,000 grant from Project Lead The Way in December to purchase laptops intended to support the school's computer science curriculum.
Manuel said the grant will buy machines powerful enough to run the district’s computer science and biomedical software—hardware he said is necessary beyond the standard student Chromebooks. He said the grant will support growth of the program and enable additional lessons and labs in the high-school computer science sequence.
Board members thanked Manuel for applying for the grant and for pursuing industry funding; several asked follow-up questions about how many machines $10,000 would buy and how the devices would be deployed. Manuel said $10,000 would cover roughly nine full-feature laptops (depending on configuration) and that he is seeking additional funding and partnerships to expand the set. District staff and the board’s finance director offered to connect Manuel with the district grants officer to find supplementary funding.
Superintendent and IT staff said they would meet with Manuel to review inventory and possibilities for supplementing the grant dollars with district resources so the teacher’s lab can reach the performance level needed for the curriculum.
