MEA members urge Manassas schools to adopt Black Lives Matter at School toolkit and mark February observance

Members of the Manassas Education Association asked the Manassas City School Board during public comment Jan. 9 to adopt and support the Black Lives Matter at School toolkit and to recognize Black Lives Matter at School Week, Feb. 3–7, 2025.

Tammy DeHaven, speaking as a member of the MEA and as a commissioner on the Virginia Education Association’s Fitz Turner Commission for Human Relations and Civil Rights, said the toolkit “offers a wealth of resources, including lesson plans, discussion guides, and strategies designed to foster conversations about race and promote antiracist practices.” She asked the board to “recognize and support Black Lives Matter at School Week” and to consider a future resolution of support.

DeHaven said the toolkit “seeks to dismantle systemic racism in education” and that adopting it would help Manassas create “inclusive classrooms where all students feel seen, valued, and respected.” She referenced the NEA’s statement that the initiative aims to spark “ongoing movement of critical reflection and honest conversation and impactful actions in school communities.”

The board did not take action on the request during the meeting; public comment was received and noted as part of the official record.
