Penfield High Leo’s Club describes monthly service projects, fundraisers to BOE

Members and officers of the Penfield High School Leo’s Club described volunteer work, fundraising and leadership development to the Penfield Central School District Board of Education on Jan. 14.
Claire McCrory, identified as club president, introduced the group. "My name is Claire McCrory. I'm a senior at Penfield High School, and I've been in Leo's Club since my freshman year, and now I am president," she said.
Club leaders said Leo’s Club — the high-school affiliate of the Lions Club — averages about one activity per month. The group described recurring service including weekly shifts at the Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf, an annual breast-cancer-walk participation (the club adviser is a breast cancer survivor), an autumn pie fundraiser with Special Touch Bakery used to fund an “Adopt-a-Family” holiday program, and eyeglass and card drives planned for the spring and winter. Vice president James Slavin and other student officers outlined upcoming activities: an eyeglass collection in January, Valentine’s cards for nursing homes in February, library book-sale help in April, and officer elections in May/June.
The club adviser, Christine Lenhart, and board members praised the students’ service. One board member noted the club reported about 65 members and called it “a phenomenal community.” Another board member offered to buy pies during the fundraiser and offered to donate eyeglasses.
The Leo’s Club presentation closed with thanks from the board and the students, and leaders said the club will continue monthly service and leadership programming.
