Students from Scribner Elementary described school clubs, music ensembles and service projects to the Penfield Central School District Board of Education and families during the Jan. 14 meeting.
Scribner Elementary students and administrators presented a school showcase to the Penfield Central School District Board of Education on Jan. 14, highlighting music, clubs, community service and classroom programs.
The presentation opened with Scott Herschler, building principal at Scribner, introducing students and thanking families and teachers. "We are thrilled to join you here today," Herschler said, inviting students from grades 3 through 5 to the front of the meeting room.
Students described a range of extracurriculars and school traditions. Madison Danielek said the Scribner PTA runs events that "make school amazing for us," including Fall Fest, spring events and a pancake breakfast. Daniel Chen described musical ensembles and the Dream Lab, where students practice engineering skills, code programmable robots and use graphic-design tools. Maggie McGinn and other students outlined clubs such as chess club, environmental club, Best Buddies and drama; Declan Whitman described Best Buddies and the Buddy Olympics; and Caitlin Wilgenhouse noted a Fire Safety Week visit by the Penfield Fire Department.
Students also spoke about recurring school events and service activities: student advisory work, the Scrivener TV announcements produced by students, yearbook club activities and the ENL Fall Fest. Sage Austellar, speaking for the student advisory group, said 13 student representatives meet with school leaders "to discuss any suggestions or concerns" and organize activities including the pancake breakfast and the end-of-year spirit week.
Board members and district officials responded with praise for the students. A board member who identified herself as a former Scribner student said, "You guys did wonderful. Thank you for sharing with us." Several board members complimented students on public speaking and community involvement.
The presentation concluded with the board and superintendent thanking students and families for attending and then inviting the visitors to leave so the board could continue the meeting.
