Margate Roderick said participants at a recent Panhandle Health meeting raised alarms about trains bringing hazardous waste from Washington through Idaho and about chemicals being sprayed from the air that she said are harming forests and waterways. "If we don't get this under control, everything else we're doing doesn't matter," Roderick said, describing community collection of soil, water and air samples to document suspected contamination.
Committee members and staff advised procedural steps. Staff recommended contacting the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) and the Idaho Department of Lands and said the Idaho Conservation organization (which currently conducts local water sampling) and other certified testers could assist. Staff cautioned that sampling methods must follow accepted protocols to be admissible if the issue were pursued in court and offered to connect residents with certified testing resources and state agencies.
No county action was taken; the exchange occurred during the public‑comment period and the committee directed residents to state agencies and conservation partners for technical assistance.
