Saddle Rock fifth‑graders and district staff honored as board recognizes student service, awards and upcoming events

At its Jan. 14 meeting the Great Neck Board recognized Saddle Rock Elementary’s 5th‑grade partnership with the Ronald McDonald House, honored Assistant Superintendent Steven Landau and heard student delegate reports and district award announcements.
The Great Neck Union Free School District Board of Education reserved meeting time on Jan. 14 to recognize student service projects, staff achievements and community awards.
Saddle Rock Elementary Principal Lucy Bradley and Assistant Principal Dr. Sarah Goldberg described a long‑running 5th‑grade service‑learning partnership with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Bradley said the program has run for 14 years and involves a student readathon whose proceeds are donated to the Ronald McDonald House; the school has raised more than $70,000 over that span. Volunteer Andy Covert (Ronald McDonald House) thanked students and described the partnership; students Amaya and Toby presented reflections about visiting the house and supporting families with hospitalized children.
The board also recognized Assistant Superintendent Steven Landau in what the superintendent called Landau’s final official board meeting. A plaque presented in recognition cited 17 years of service as assistant superintendent of secondary education. The superintendent noted the board has agreed to extend Landau’s contract through the end of the year to assist with a transition and said the district expects to appoint a replacement at the February meeting.
Student delegates reported school‑level news and upcoming events at North and South High Schools, North and South Middle Schools and the district’s elementary schools. Highlights included three finalists in an American Kennel Club art contest from North High, an upcoming guest speaker at North High on addiction and recovery, South High’s holiday basketball tournament champion, a multicultural heritage night at North Middle, and middle‑school spelling bee participation. The superintendent also said the district will recognize five Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars at the February board meeting and announced awards for GNPS TV (national award from the International Tele Association) and North High Principal Dr. Dan Saltzman (Louis E. Yavner Award presented by the Board of Regents).
The superintendent announced that civil‑rights advocate Martin Luther King III will visit district schools on Feb. 6 to speak to students in grades 5–12 about his father’s legacy; the board will approve an agreement for that visit on the agenda that evening.
Several board members and administrators praised the students, staff and community partners during the recognitions. No formal policy decisions were made in the recognitions segment beyond routine acknowledgements and the contract extension timing noted by the superintendent.
