Great Neck board adopts 2025–26 calendar, restores April 1 day off for start of Passover

The Great Neck Union Free School District Board of Education unanimously adopted the 2025–26 district calendar at its Jan. 14 meeting, moving a proposed day off from the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to April 1 so the district will be closed the day the Jewish holiday of Passover begins at sundown.
Board member Dr. Bassett told colleagues the change corrects an oversight found after the board reviewed the draft calendar in December. "We had included a day off prior to Thanksgiving... but unfortunately, when we took a closer look at the calendar, we realized we had omitted a day off on April 1st," Bassett said, and added that historically the district has not held school the day prior to Passover beginning at sundown.
Bassett said the switch was intended to avoid high absenteeism and the need for faculty and staff to use personal time for religious observance. The board discussion noted there were no other changes since the December review. The motion to adopt the calendar passed by voice vote, recorded in the meeting as unanimous.
Superintendent Dr. Bossert said the adopted calendar will be publicized to the community and that the district followed state and contractual requirements in preparing the schedule.
The board took the vote under agenda item 9A. No member recorded a dissent; the meeting transcript records the motion as passing unanimously.
