The Plainfield SD 202 Personnel, Policy and Administration (PPA) committee on Jan. 15 reviewed nine revised district policies and recommended two staffing requests for summer help in district operations.
The committee discussed policy updates and agreed to seek board permission to place nine policies on 30-day public display. Dr. Craig Brown, director of administration and personnel, told the group the recommended changes are intended to align policy text with current practice: “That first paragraph does not match our practice, current practice,” he said regarding proposed language in Policy 4:112 on student automobile use.
Why it matters: placing policies on 30-day display starts the public review period required by district rules and gives staff time to refine language before the board considers final adoption. Several of the proposed edits clarify responsibilities for staff, expand counseling-endorsement language, consolidate hazing language into the student behavior policy, and update legal citations to the Illinois School Code.
Key action recommendations and details - Nine policies recommended for a 30-day display: 4:112 (Student automobile use); 5:172 (Staff consulting activities); 5:206 (Tutoring for pay); 6:40 (Curriculum design); 6:134 (Advanced college placement) and 6:138 (Student fees, fines and charges) (noted for February); 6:180 (Extended instruction program); 6:270 (Guidance and counseling program); and 7:190/7:192 (Student behavior/hazing consolidation). The committee asked staff to present the full 30-day display package to the board for the required public posting/notification. - Summer hires for OMT: staff recommended hiring 18 painters, 4 maintenance helpers, 20 custodial helpers, 4 groundskeeper helpers and 3 office-staff helpers for an estimated 11-week period at $15.50/hour, 38 hours/week; total projected cost $317,471 (an increase of $50,787 from the prior year). The committee was told work durations may vary based on project completion and employee schedules. - Summer hires for Technology: staff recommended hiring 10 temporary technology workers for about 11 weeks at $15.50/hour; total projected cost $64,790 (a $4,180 increase from last year). Administrators said the pay rate was raised to $15.50 to remain competitive after the January 1 minimum-wage increase.
What the committee directed next: staff will present the policy materials for formal 30-day display and will carry the summer-hire recommendations to the Jan. 22 Education Business meeting for final approval. Committee members asked for clarifying language on parking and student discipline to be tied to the student handbook where appropriate.
Process and context: the policy review is part of the scheduled PPA process. Several policies flagged for later review (including advanced placement and student-fee matters) will return to the PPA meeting in February for additional review before display.
Ending: If approved for 30-day display, the policies will be posted and open for public comment before the board considers final action; summer-hire staffing will next appear on the Education Business agenda for board action.
