Committee approves Sardine Can outdoor liquor extension; holds Bay Family request for more security details

The Green Bay Protection and Policy Committee on Jan. 13 approved a temporary extension of the Sardine Can’s liquor-license premises to its back parking lot, amending one of the requested May dates, and held a separate request from Bay Family Restaurant for more information on fencing and security.
The committee’s approval for the Sardine Can, located at 128 S. Broadway, was made with an amendment to change a requested May 19 date to May 10 and explicitly noted the extension was “pending approval of the renewal application for the 2025–2026 year.” A lawmaker moved to approve the item as amended and members voted in favor; the item passed and will be forwarded as a recommendation to the Common Council for final action on Jan. 26.
Police and licensing staff told the committee they have no operational concerns with the Sardine Can’s events. A police department representative said the venue “does a great job of gating off the property” and cited its fencing and security as a positive example for other bars. Committee discussion referred to multiple scheduled dates in July through November that were included in the extension request.
Separately, Bay Family Restaurant, 1301 S. Military Ave., asked to extend its liquor-premises to an adjacent parking lot for a period in April. Committee members and police noted the applicant’s submitted site map showed only a narrow sliver of area and did not clearly indicate fencing or security plans. A police department representative asked staff to contact the applicant before the next meeting and requested the application be amended to show a barrier (for example, snow fence) and adequate security.
The committee moved to hold the Bay Family item to the next meeting (Jan. 27) so staff could obtain an amended plan or clarify whether fencing and security will be provided; the motion carried.
The committee chair reminded members that actions taken at the committee are recommendations to the Common Council, which will make the final decisions at its Jan. 26 meeting.
