Arts Commission extends lease for Adolfo Gonzalez sculpture at 1300 C Street for one year

The City of Las Vegas Arts Commission voted to extend the temporary loan for the sculpture Enriched Heritage by artist Adolfo Gonzalez at 1300 C Street (Historic West Side) for one year at a lease fee of $3,000.

Laura Machado of Cultural Affairs told commissioners the sculpture is currently installed at the Aboto Collective at 1300 C Street through the contemporary public art program, which typically places temporary works for one year. Machado said the artist used permanent materials—welded steel with a concrete foundation—and that the city could either extend the loan for $3,000 for an additional year or purchase the work outright for $40,000.

Commissioner discussion covered the city’s rotating-sculpture goals and budgeting for temporary installations. Commissioner Portnoy asked whether the city has a program to rotate works and noted the exposure and visibility value for artists; staff said the existing contemporary program has evolved into a rotating model called “3 on Main,” where artists receive $10,000 each for a two-year placement on designated pads. Commissioner Lee said a one-year lease extension would be the least expensive immediate option; Commissioner Lee moved to extend the lease for one year at $3,000 and Commissioner Douglas seconded. Staff will arrange the one-year extension contract and continue program planning for rotating sculpture pads and future calls for artists. If the commission later chooses to purchase the piece, staff noted the $40,000 purchase price presented at the meeting.
