District 97 launches 2025 "One Book, One District" literacy program

Oak Park Elementary School District 97 staff on Jan. 14 described the districtOne Book, One District literacy program for 2025, which provides copies of a single title to students and families and coordinates school activities around reading and discussion.
Teacher-librarians Laurie Conley (Whittier) and Mr. Gillian (NAN) introduced the selection A Sea Otter to the Rescue (and a related picture-book title for pre-K/PK/EC) and explained how schools and PTOs will distribute copies. Librarians said they recorded chapter read-alouds, acquired Spanish translations, organized kickoff events at each school and scheduled activities including recycled-material sculpture contests, habitat-design projects and a virtual visit with Morro Bay Aquarium staff to connect reading with science topics.
Patrick Robinson, assistant superintendent for elementary schools, said the program aims to foster district-wide literacy, community and student engagement. Librarians demonstrated the program hub and a live otter webcam available to families. The district provided student copies and PTOs funded staff copies.
Ending: Librarians asked families and staff to follow the One Book hub for reading schedules and activities and thanked PTOs and volunteers for funding and event support.
