Abel noted demographic statistics and historical figures during her remarks, and she credited local groups such as the Muslim Civic Coalition for their advocacy in achieving recognition at the state level.
Representatives from local Muslim organizations — listed during the presentation as Sajjad Mohammed and Fazlir Rahman from the Islamic Center of McLean County and Driss Al Akarich from the Muslim Civic Coalition — were acknowledged and given time to speak. A speaker identified as a member of the Muslim Civic Coalition, who said they were originally from Morocco, reminded the board that Morocco was the first country to recognize U.S. independence, and thanked the board for the proclamation.
The proclamation’s text recited historical contributions and contemporary examples of Muslim American civic and economic participation and called for community observances such as arts events, film screenings and scholarship contests to highlight Muslim American heritage. The board adopted the proclamation and presenters were recognized and thanked.
