District 97 speakers welcome tentative teachers’ agreement, praise classroom staff

The most immediate news from public comment came when a board member interjected to note a tentative agreement had been reached with the teachersunion on Saturday; multiple speakers responded by thanking the district and bargaining team. Erica Shannon, who identified herself as a member of the D97 OPTA and a 25-year teacher, said she was pleased the bargaining teams had reached a tentative agreement after 15 months of negotiations and a long bargaining day.
Student and parent speakers described positive classroom experiences and asked the district to sustain supports. Second-grade student Ellie Kirschner named several teachers by first name and said, "I think it should be ongoing for the future" when referring to the district—ffort called One Book, One District. Parent Tina Harlow spoke on behalf of her daughter Annabelle Harrell, a sixth grader, calling attention to repeated challenges with the district cceleration process and urging the board to simplify access to advanced single-subject math so families are not required to navigate complex applications and testing schedules.
The district nd union were not yet reporting final terms to the public at the time of comment; the board acknowledged the tentative agreement during the meeting but did not take a formal vote on it at Tuesday—vening—usiness. Board leaders and district staff thanked speakers and said the administration would continue work on implementation and communications as contract ratification proceeds.
District staff later reiterated that more detailed materials, including any formal ratification steps, would be shared once the union nd district complete their internal processes.
Ending: Public comment closed before the board genda proceeded to presentations on math instruction, a middle school redesign and other business. The tentative agreement will move to the ratification process for union members and then back to the board for any formal actions tied to contract implementation.
