Council elects Councilmember Kehl as deputy mayor after written ballot

After nominations and written ballots, the Topeka Governing Body elected Councilmember Kehl to serve a one-year term as deputy mayor by a 6–4 vote over Councilmember Hiller.
The Topeka Governing Body elected a deputy mayor on Jan. 14 by secret ballot, selecting the automatically nominated councilmember Kehl over nominated councilmember Hiller.
Council rules required automatic nomination of the longest-serving councilmember who had not yet served as deputy mayor; Councilmember Kehl accepted that nomination and Councilmember Hiller was also nominated. Ballots were distributed, signed and collected under the Open Meetings Act procedures described by the city attorney; clerks tallied votes: Kehl received six votes and Hiller four. The council declared Kehl the new deputy mayor for a one-year term.
Council and administrative staff noted the deputy mayor’s duties and confirmed the council will proceed with regular governance duties under the selected deputy mayor.
