Irondale and Mounds View student representatives report winter activities, concerts and athletic results

Student representatives from Irondale and Mounds View high schools delivered updates on recent events, student activities and athletic achievements.

Irondale student representative Sydney said Irondale held a students-versus-staff basketball game on Jan. 3 in which students won 18-14, sent a youth-in-government delegation to a conference in Minneapolis and served about 600 cups of hot chocolate at an early-morning student council event. Sydney also reported a movie night showing of Home Alone, a planned winter dance on Saturday, Feb. 8 (theme: “Frosted Fairy Tale”), and a mini thrift store planned Feb. 5–7 in partnership with the Earth Club.

Mounds View student representative (identifying themself at the meeting) reported December and January activities including the senior class T-shirt sale, National Honor Society fundraising on Dec. 16–17 with proceeds to NAMI and the Shining Light Foundation, an FMSC volunteering event with a record 55 volunteers on Dec. 28, and athletic highlights: the Mustang wrestling team placed second at the Rumble in the Red tournament and the boys swim team placed second at True Team sections. The representative noted that about 20 students will attend the Suburban East Conference Music Festival Feb. 2–3 and that ensembles will work with a visiting conductor at St. Olaf College.

Both representatives mentioned upcoming student productions and service events: Irondale’s drama previews and winter one-acts, and Mounds View’s planning for a spring Mean Girls musical and a student-led mental health walk planned for late April or early May.

The reports were given during the student representative portion of the board meeting and were largely informational; no formal board action was taken on the items reported.
