Provo school board tentatively assigns members to committees, sets graduation speaking slots

Provo — During its Jan. 14 study session, the Provo School District Board of Education discussed committee assignments for the coming year, reviewed meeting times and tentatively allocated members to board committees that handle policy, legislative work, safety, finance, facilities and other advisory roles.

Board vice president Jennifer Cartridge led the committee review and said policy and legislative committees are “our two main board committees” because they require sustained board-level involvement. Members discussed available times and possible shifts — for example, policy committee presently meets Mondays at 3 p.m. and legislative committee meets Thursdays at 1 p.m.; members discussed moving those times so newly appointed members can attend.
Members tentatively allocated seats so that most board members would serve on at least one standing committee; the group discussed staffing the safety committee, the finance/audit committee, facilities committee, parent advisory and PTA liaison roles, and the student advisory council liaison. Members noted some committee meetings occur during work hours and that alternates will be needed when conflicts arise.
On graduation speaking assignments, the board confirmed the practice that parents who are board members may speak at their child’s graduation; those slots were provisionally allocated among members for spring and fall ceremonies.
Ending: Members agreed to finalize committee rosters and meeting times at the business meeting, to confirm alternates when needed and to communicate changes to staff and the public.
