El Segundo volunteer group reports planting progress, seeks support for pollinator garden

Barbara Boland, a resident and member of the newly formed El Segundo Blue Butterfly Conservancy, updated the Recreation and Parks Commission on the group's planting and volunteer work and asked for continued staff support.
Boland said the nonprofit has planted native species at two city sites — small ovals at Library Park and a larger hillside along Imperial Avenue between Hillcrest and Loma Vista — and has engaged volunteers from across the community. "We have plenty of knowledge, and I'm happy to talk to whoever," Boland said.
The group credited the Parks & Recreation Department with assistance for planting events at Library Park and for recurring support at the hillside site Boland described as the Hillcrest site. She said the group has involved schools, churches, scouts, Chevron employees and other community volunteers and noted student interns and Eagle Scout projects among its participants.
Commissioners did not take formal action on the presentation. Boland said the conservancy plans summer educational tours when pollinators are active and that volunteers will continue to expand plantings east and west along the Imperial Avenue hillside as future funding allows.
The commission acknowledged the report during the public-communications portion of the meeting and closed public comment after Boland finished.
