The Smith County Commissioners Court on Jan. 14 adopted a resolution proclaiming Jan. 18, 2025, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Founders Day; approved multiple board appointments and reappointments; authorized plats; received a sheriff’s racial profiling report; authorized advertising for a mitigation RFP; and ratified several expenditures and transfers.

Resolution for Alpha Kappa Alpha Founders Day: The court adopted a resolution recognizing the sorority’s 117th anniversary and proclaiming Jan. 18, 2025, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Founders Day in Smith County. The court recorded one commissioner absent at the time of the resolution. Commissioner Carraway moved to adopt the resolution; Commissioner Harritt seconded; the court recorded “All in favor” and the motion carried.

Appointments and reappointments: The court approved appointments and reappointments to local boards and committees:
- Appointment of Jay Scott Harrod to the City of Glendale Reinvestment Zone No. 3 board for a two-year term, Jan. 1, 2025–Dec. 31, 2026; motion made and seconded and carried.
- Appointment of Commissioner Christina Drury to the Tyler Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Committee; motion seconded and carried.
- Reappointment of Britney Nichols (Position 1) and Keith Youngblood (Position 2) to the Andrews Center Board of Directors for two-year terms ending Oct. 31, 2026; motion seconded and carried.

Plats: The court authorized the county judge to sign three plats: a replat of East Shore Estates Unit 7 (Precinct 2), a replat of Emerald Bay Lake subdivision Unit 1B (Precinct 1), and a final plat for Adani Acres (Precinct 3) that divides a tract into 19 lots and includes a new roadway and cul-de-sac. County planning staff recommended approval and the court approved the signatures.

Racial profiling report: The court received the Smith County Sheriff’s Office 2024 racial profiling report as required under the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and related regulations. County staff said acceptance requires no vote; additional law enforcement agency reports will be presented in coming weeks.

Expenditures and transfers: The court approved ratification of payments and transfers that included two IT capital expenditures (computer equipment and office dividers/chairs) listed at $900.33 each and a $35,000 Facility Improvement Fund contingency allocation to cover asbestos abatement costs for demolition of the Gulf States building.

Executive session: The court convened an executive session to consult with counsel on Hughes et al. v. Smith County (case no. 623-cv-00344) under Texas Government Code Section 551.071 and returned to open session only to adjourn.
