Supervisors approve revised recycling-supervisor job description as county considers contracting hauling and service changes

Job description changes: The board approved adding a minimum of two years of direct supervisory experience and a commercial-driver-license requirement to the recycling supervisor description. The adopted language requires possession of a Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire (the board discussed making Class A preferred while allowing flexibility for Class B holders and adding a six-month attainment window).
Why it matters: County staff told supervisors the recycling operation has been short-handed and some remote camera and equipment issues at the transfer/recycling site need replacement. Supervisors discussed short-term options, including soliciting proposals to contract hauling of bins and recycling material from now until the end of June. That short-term contracting is intended to keep service running while the county finalizes hiring and operational changes.
Other operational notes: Road department crews will help clear site debris; the county has moved a seldom-used shipping container to the road shop for use there. Staff said hazardous household-chemical collections and other cleanup work are complete and the site is in better condition going into the new year.
Board direction: The board approved the updated job description and asked staff to publish a request-for-proposals for short-term hauling contracts to cover operations through the end of June; supervisors said they will examine fee structures for service to private entities that currently use county bin service.
Ending: Supervisors stated the county will not end recycling services; discussions are focused on staffing, operational efficiency and potential user fees for private-bin service.
