NIU board approves $2 million fee for football-only membership in Mountain West Conference

The university proposed to pay the fee in six annual installments of $333,333.35 and said the fee and other transition expenses would be covered by conference revenue distributions and guarantees rather than drawn from current institutional funds.
The action matters, university leaders said, because conference realignment has reshaped college athletics in recent years and because the move is intended to improve the financial and competitive outlook for NIU football. Dr. Freeman told trustees the university is committed to a balanced budget for fiscal year 2026 and said the membership fee "will not hinder the progress" toward that goal.
Trustees asked questions about academic impacts, travel demands, long-term stability of the Mountain West and effects on NIU's other sports programs. Trustee Rita Athas asked whether increased travel would affect athletes' academic performance; Dr. Freeman answered that the university only would join a conference that "upheld the same high academic standards," and said weekend air travel could reduce missed class time compared with some current midweek bus trips.
Sean Frazier, NIU's athletic director and vice president for intercollegiate athletics, said he saw opportunity in the move and described the Mountain West as likely to continue to adjust but a reasonable home for NIU football. "I do think that, for us right now, the ability to use our brand to garner the level of support, and sustainability is a big thing," Frazier said, and added that the university expects to form a transition team that will include campus leaders to maximize institutional benefits beyond athletics.
Board members pressed on competitive and budgetary questions. Trustees were told NIU expects to be roughly midlevel in operational budgets among Mountain West programs and that guaranteed revenues would allow the university to scale as needed. Trustees also received assurance that other sports programs would continue to be funded: the administration said it would "fully fund and fully support" the university's other teams and would not move forward at the expense of NIU's Olympic sports.
After discussion, the board moved and seconded the amended item and approved the $2,000,000 obligation. At the close of the vote, Chair Gales said, "Get ready, Mountain West. The NIU football Huskies are coming in 2026." The board scheduled its next full meeting for March 20, 2025, at 9 a.m.
