Council approves motion to create a third 'boundless' playground in West Los Angeles

The Los Angeles City Council on March 6 approved a motion to proceed with planning for a new "boundless" playground in West Los Angeles, part of a citywide effort to create play spaces that accommodate children of all abilities.

The motion, introduced by Councilmember Feuer and described by supporters as the next in a network of inclusive playgrounds following Shane's Inspiration in Griffith Park and a project at Hansen Dam, passed by roll call (10 ayes). Feuer said the initiative had strong cross-office support and praised collaboration among the Recreation and Parks Department, council offices and community groups.

"We've had an item in this chamber a couple years ago where we focused on the fact that there, up to that point, was no playground in California where kids with disabilities could play with kids of all abilities without help," Feuer said, noting the city had since created accessible playgrounds and that the new project would expand that network.

Councilmember Walters, chairing arts-related matters, asked Rec and Parks to consider using sustainable building materials as the department advances the design and implementation of the West Los Angeles playground.

Council direction on the motion called for Rec and Parks to proceed with the project and to coordinate with relevant council offices; the roll-call vote approved the measure and instructed the department to take the necessary steps to implement the agreed-upon plans.
