Interim Superintendent Francis Lynch used his first formal update to the Tehachapi Unified School District Board of Trustees on Jan. 14 to summarize site visits, celebrate recent athletics and extracurricular achievements, and review enrollment and attendance data.
Lynch said he completed a series of site visits on his first days in the district, visiting school sites, the maintenance and bus yards and the cafeteria management office to meet staff. He also recognized the Capturing Kids'Hearts student greeters from Cummings Valley Elementary School who welcomed the board.
On enrollment and attendance, Lynch reported that districtwide attendance for week 18 of the school year rose to 92.3%, up from 87.9% the same week last year. He said average daily attendance (ADA) was 3,853 this year compared with 3,720 for the same week last year; the district noted 57 fewer enrolled students that week year-over-year but a higher ADA because of improved attendance rates.
Lynch provided a detailed sports update: girls and boys basketball, soccer and wrestling programs posted tournament finishes and individual athlete recognitions; varsity boys basketball began the season 9'4 and the girls program had tournament success. Coaches and student-athletes were named for individual accomplishments in the superintendent's report.
On student services and programming, Lynch described before-and-after-school care available from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at elementary sites, a Boys & Girls Club partnership at the middle school, and a 30-day summer program that operates nine hours per day and costs $50 per week (free for families meeting economic-need criteria). He also listed a range of student services including adult education, attendance and discipline, foster and homeless youth services, home-hospital instruction, independent studies, social work services, student transfers and school safety measures.
Lynch closed by noting upcoming district dates and events including facility and citizens task-force meetings, a professional development day, and scheduled board meetings in early February.
No formal board action was required for the superintendent's update; trustees asked for follow-up items elsewhere on the agenda, including plans to increase high-school participation in state testing.
