The Sarpy County Board accepted the treasurer’s recommendation to deny certain motor vehicle exemption applications that were filed before the statutory renewal month and directed that the county retain the submitted paperwork for resubmission at the regular February meeting.
Commissioners discussed whether early submissions could be held and processed; legal guidance cited by staff said filings must be made in the month they are due. Treasurer Jeff Meixels told the board, "We're taking the one we have," when asked whether taxpayers would need to refile; county staff clarified the documents will be resubmitted by the county at the February 4 meeting and taxpayers will not need to take additional action.
A motion to accept the treasurer’s recommended denial of the out-of-period applications (including a 2024 Toyota Highlander and a 2003 Ford F350 cab chassis, and noting that a Chevrolet P30 step van and a duplicate Highlander application had been previously approved on consent) was moved and seconded; the motion carried 5-0. Commissioners and staff recorded that the filings are being set aside to comply with the statute’s monthly filing requirement and will be processed at the February meeting.
