Commission approves up to $31.35 million in bond funds for Hamilton County Schools maintenance projects

The Hamilton County Commission approved Resolution 125-10, appropriating up to $31,348,000 in bond proceeds for the Hamilton County Schools to address major deferred maintenance projects. The resolution also authorizes up to an additional $500,000 in bond funds contingent on the Hamilton County Board of Education approving additional projects.

Commissioners said they backed the funding but several urged accountability and clearer outcomes for student performance. Commissioner Mackey said "there's gotta be some accountability" for low test scores despite substantial funding and asked the school system and officials to explain how the money will affect student outcomes. Other commissioners noted the appropriation was the result of collaboration between the county mayor and school leadership.

County leaders said the investment is intended to address systemwide infrastructure needs and the most urgent maintenance projects rather than a pro rata district-by-district distribution. County staff and the mayor's office identified a major single item on the list as HVAC and infrastructure work at Orchard Knob Middle School.

Commissioner Sharp described the appropriation as "long overdue" for many projects; commissioners emphasized the appropriation is intended to improve school facilities and to be used alongside oversight from the Board of Education. Commissioners approved the resolution by roll call; no dollar reallocation or specific project-by-project spending detail was supplied in the commission meeting beyond the approved total and the tie to Board of Education approval for the additional $500,000.

The resolution passed by recorded vote; county staff will work with the school system to schedule projects and report on progress through the normal budget and capital-improvement processes.
