During the Jan. 9 meeting, school committee members raised concerns about participation in JV girls basketball and the broader trend of students seeking athletic opportunities outside the district.
Committee members said the district experienced low JV girls numbers in recent years — noting a recent year with six JV girls and the graduation of multiple senior players — and that participation numbers can be affected by an age‑cohort "bubble" related to COVID‑era disruptions. The athletic director, according to committee discussion, decided to focus resources at the middle school level to rebuild participation, retaining a larger middle‑school roster this year to strengthen future high‑school teams.
Committee members and staff also reported an uptick in families using interdistrict school choice with athletics as a motivating factor. Staff noted the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) allows appeals to permit immediate participation in some cases, and that the district has been involved in appeals that were allowed. One committee member cautioned that families' expectations about college scholarships can influence early specialization in single sports and that many students and families are choosing club or travel programs (for example, indoor winter soccer) which can draw athletes away from school teams.
The district and committee said they are monitoring the situation, working with middle‑school programming and local youth leagues (QYBL) to rebuild pipelines, and communicating with families; the athletic director reported strong participation in youth league basketball this season, which could help replenish school teams as those players reach higher grades.
